Choosing Your Configuration

Side-by-side placement is the most popular choice, spreading your workspace horizontally across two screens. This configuration excels for comparing documents, working with spreadsheets while referencing source material, or monitoring multiple applications simultaneously. For most office tasks and general productivity work, side-by-side monitors offer the best balance of usability and comfort.
Stacked vertical placement positions one monitor above the other, minimising horizontal desk space while maintaining a substantial viewing area. This arrangement works particularly well in narrow workspaces or when desk width is limited. Developers sometimes prefer this configuration for viewing long code files, while video editors may use it to keep timeline controls visible beneath their preview monitor.
The angled or curved configuration arranges monitors in a gentle arc, with each screen angled slightly toward the viewer. This setup reduces neck rotation when moving between screens and keeps both displays within comfortable viewing angles. It is especially beneficial for ultrawide workflows or when both monitors receive roughly equal attention throughout the day.
Primary vs Secondary
Identify which monitor you will use most. Your primary monitor should sit directly in front of you, while the secondary screen is offset to the side. Avoid splitting the seam between two monitors directly at eye level—this forces constant micro-adjustments that accumulate into strain over a workday.
Physical Positioning for Ergonomics
Ergonomic principles become even more critical when multiple screens are involved. The fundamental goal remains unchanged—maintain neutral head and neck posture—but achieving this requires careful attention to monitor height, distance, and angle relative to your seated position.
For side-by-side setups with a clearly dominant primary monitor, position that screen directly in front of you with the top edge at eye level, following standard single-monitor ergonomics. Place the secondary monitor immediately adjacent, angling it slightly inward—about 30 degrees—so you can view it with minimal head rotation. Align the tops of both screens to create a level horizon across your field of vision.
If you divide attention relatively equally between both monitors, position the seam between them slightly off-centre rather than directly in front of your face. This arrangement allows you to face one screen with your body while the other remains easily accessible with a small head turn. The screen you use slightly more often should be the one directly ahead.
Maintain consistent viewing distance across both monitors—typically 50 to 70 centimetres from your eyes. If one screen sits significantly further away than the other, your eyes must constantly refocus when switching between them, leading to fatigue and strain over time. Dual monitor arms make achieving this consistency easier by allowing independent adjustment of each screen's depth.
Matching Your Monitors
While dual-monitor setups can work with mismatched screens, using identical monitors—or at least monitors with the same resolution and size—creates a more seamless experience. When monitors differ significantly, inconsistencies in colour reproduction, brightness, and pixel density become distracting and can create visual discomfort.
If you must use different monitors, try to match their physical sizes and native resolutions. A 27-inch 4K monitor paired with a 24-inch 1080p screen creates scaling complications and visual discontinuity. Better to pair monitors of similar specifications even if brands differ. Calibrate colour settings to achieve the closest possible match, reducing the jarring transition when moving content between screens.
Height consistency matters as well. If your monitors have different stand designs, one may sit higher than the other by default. Use monitor arms, risers, or adjustable stands to align both screens at the same vertical level. The transition between monitors should feel natural, not like stepping up or down a visual stair.
Bezels and Gaps
The bezels (frames) surrounding your screens create a visual gap where content disappears. Minimise this by choosing monitors with thin bezels and positioning screens as close together as practical. However, avoid overlapping bezels, which can damage screens and create viewing angle problems.
Display Settings and Configuration
Once physically positioned, you need to configure your operating system to recognise and properly arrange your displays. Both Windows and macOS provide display settings that allow you to specify the relative position of each monitor, set a primary display, and adjust resolution and scaling for each screen.
In Windows, access display settings by right-clicking the desktop and selecting Display Settings. Drag the monitor icons to match their physical arrangement—if your secondary monitor is to the left, position its icon to the left of the primary. Click Identify to display numbers on each screen confirming which is which. Set your primary monitor (where the taskbar and startup apps appear) by selecting it and checking the corresponding option.
On macOS, open System Preferences and navigate to Displays. Click the Arrangement tab to drag monitor representations into their correct relative positions. The white menu bar indicator shows which screen is currently the primary display—drag it to your preferred monitor.
Ensure both monitors run at their native resolution for the sharpest image quality. If using monitors with different resolutions, you may need to adjust scaling settings so that elements like text and icons appear at similar physical sizes across both screens. This prevents the jarring experience of a mouse pointer that appears to change size when crossing from one display to another.

When selecting a dual monitor arm, verify weight capacity for each arm segment—not just the total capacity. If each arm supports 9 kilograms and you plan to mount 8-kilogram monitors, you are within safe limits. Also confirm the arm's reach and motion range accommodate your desired monitor sizes and positions. Larger monitors require arms with greater extension capability and sturdier construction.
Optimising Your Workflow
Hardware and settings provide the foundation, but true dual-monitor productivity comes from developing workflows that leverage expanded screen real estate. The most effective approach depends on your profession and typical tasks, but some principles apply broadly.
Reserve your primary monitor for active work—the document you are writing, the code you are editing, or the design you are creating. Use your secondary monitor for reference material, communication tools, and monitoring applications. This division keeps your focus on the main task while supporting information remains accessible without switching windows.
Take advantage of window snapping features built into modern operating systems. Windows allows you to snap applications to each monitor's edges or quadrants using keyboard shortcuts. Third-party applications like DisplayFusion or Magnet extend these capabilities further, enabling custom window layouts that save and restore with a single click.
Experiment with your arrangement over the first few weeks. What seems logical initially may not match how you actually work. Pay attention to which applications you use most frequently, which require the most screen space, and how often you move content between monitors. Adjust positions and workflow assignments until your setup feels natural and efficient.
